I met with Mali Mendez (pronounced Molly) and discussed her experience taking the bus and getting a Seattle Pacific University-provided bus pass for the first time. Additional help with filming was provided by Mia Sanchez.

Monthly Rate Of Bus Passes by Kennedy Polk

In college, many students tend to be either from out of state or commuters, which makes access to a car or transportation quite challenging to come by. Thankfully, there is public transportation that allows students the ability to travel to and fro from campus whenever they wish. Unfortunately, this brings up another problem: the cost of taking those modes of transportation.

The graph compares the One-Zone and Two-Zone Peak prices based on Seattle Pacific University’s monthly rate for bus passes compared to King County’s rate. According to the King County Orca website, they provide a service called monthly pugetpass, where riders can buy a pass with an unlimited number of trips during a calendar month depending on a certain fare value. Seattle Pacific University, however, offers students a 30% discount on both one-zone and two-zone passes.

The Card That Can Do It All

Who knew a little plastic card could access so many different things? Seattle Pacific Campus cards, or its more common name, Falcon cards, play a significant role in many students here. For one such student named Breanna Smith, the falcon card plays a vital role in her day-to-day life as a university student.

Breanna is a 3rd year Visual communication major at Seattle Pacific University. In addition to working hard as a student, she is also the treasurer and publicist of the student club called SPU ʻOhana ʻO Hawaiʻi, as well as the president of the up-and-coming club called the Indigenous Peoples’ Club or IPC for short. As an active part of the student club community here on campus, proper advertisement and spreading the word about club events are crucial parts of Breanna’s role. According to Breanna, she stated that “Being able to use my Falcon card to print posters from the campus printers really makes it easier for me to focus on getting my new club ready.” Breanna had to print around 15-20 posters just for her new club, as well as any additional posters required for her position in the Ohana club.

For her position in the Ohana club, sometimes she helps members with preparing food for the fundraisers that are held from time to time. As such, the need to purchase ingredients plays a critical role in ensuring that the fundraisers have something to sell. Breanna states, “I sometimes check out the Orca cards provided on campus so I can take the bus to the store whenever I don’t have a car available.” Just as Breanna stated, having a campus card allows you to check out 24-hour bus passes that allow students who don’t have access to a car the opportunity to travel off campus. Falcon card is a very versatile card that provides many different uses to the students on SPU’s campus.
